1. The free-living larvae are normally fully aquatic, but the tadpoles of some species (such as Nannophrys ceylonensis) are semi-terrestrial and live among wet rocks.

2. The morphology of the adult females gives little clue as to their true identity, but the free-living larvae show their true taxonomic affiliations.

3. On encountering sea water the cocoons burst open and the free-living larvae are liberated.
